Xbox says the way it dealt with Lionhead Studios was 'unrivalled of the biggest missteps' information technology successful

Microsoft has admitted that its handling of the defunct Lionhead Studios was "one of the biggest missteps" the company successful. The comments came during a newfound six-part documentary film serial publication called Power On: The Story of Xbox. The 6th installment covers the tumultuous Xbox One launch and the gradual itinerary the company took to prioritize gaming again, aided by its many studio acquisitions (thanks, IGN). When superficial back at how it initially dealt with acquired studios, head of game creator experiences Sarah Bond aforesaid "one of the biggest missteps that we learned from in the past was Lionhead."

Former Xbox Game Studios universal manager Shannon Loftis echoed Bond's thought. "We had already publicised Fable 1 and it was a hit. People loved it," she aforementioned. "The beauty of that game—IT was fundamentally like a moving stained-methamphetamine hydrochloride window. People wanted more, so we bought Lionhead, Those were good geezerhood.

"The game was great, just everything came put together. But after Fable 2, Kinect came on and the Parable-Kinect matrimony just ne'er real took. And then Fable: The Travel was a passion project for much of citizenry, just I think it deviated jolly significantly from the pillars of what made Fiction 1 and 2 so popular."

Lionhead was unmatchable of the studios sentenced to Kinect growth designate aft in the 2010s, along with the likes of Rare. While the last mentioned ready-made it out onto the other side, IT ultimately proved to be the former's untying.

"We acquired Lionhead in 2006, shut it down in 2016," Bond paper continued. "A mate long time later we mirrored back on it experience: 'What did we larn? How perform we not repeat our same mistakes?'"

Phil Spencer implicit that Lionhead's demise shaped the way Xbox viewed its developers. "You acquire a studio apartment for what they're great at now," he said. "And your job is to help accelerate how they do what they do, not them accelerate what you do."

That's probably as ambient A Spencer wish ever come to expression: Yeah, we shouldn't have put them on Kinect or forced them into making a Fable live service spunky. The latter, Allegory Legends, was content-complete and in a live of import when Microsoft decided to close the studio, and never adage acquittance.

Lionhead was a fantastic studio, with the Fable series distillery cemented as one of my all-time favourites. Its blockage was an incredibly sad one, and a developer that many still miss now. It's something that present and other Microsoft figures seem to tactile property too, with Loftis wrapping her question by saying "I wish Lionhead were still a viable studio."

Bond said that the "challenges" Microsoft went through with Lionhead "taught us what to do this clock," with the company now placing a much bigger focus along letting studios remain doing what they're doing with its 23 different acquisitions.

Mollie Taylor

A fresh writer in the industry, Mollie has been taken under Personal computer Gamer's RGB-laden backstage, making sure she doesn't mug up to overmuch roguery on the site. She's not quite sure what a Command &A; Conquer is, only she can yap awa for hours about all the obscure rhythm games and strange MMOs from the 2000s. She's been cooking up all manner of news, previews and features while she's been here, but especially enjoys when she gets to write about Final Fantasy, Persona, The Sims, and whatsoever other game she's currently hopelessly fixated on. On that point's a good chance she's boring another PC Gamer writer about her latest obsession as we speak.
